Commuting between NY and Tokyo, Hiroshi Sugimoto is a great photographer, prolific and innovative, a collector, an architect, an artist … and more than many, he writes about what he thinks. His last project summarizes it all. The Enoura Observatory opened in fall 2017, near Odawara. There, Sugimoto is developing a plot of land en route to become a huge masterpiece. Its brain is already thinking about how it will look like when a ruin. Passerelle has had the chance to privatize the place for two European press tours in spring 2018. There were beautiful bentos and sake, and food for thought as well, beyond the experience itself. The very contemporary complex revisits what humanity is about, speaks about Japanese aesthetics and traditions, gathers stones connected to Japan’s spiritual history.
